Research & Documentation
The Research and Documentation department brings together professionals from the fields of archival science, documentation, library science and history. Different sections of the department are responsible for archives and documentation, media and interviews, the list of prisoner names, the supplementary level of the permanent exhibition, and the library. The department as a whole bears responsibility for the research that has gone into the permanent exhibition.
The Research and Documentation department focuses on collecting, preserving, recording and studying resources dealing with the various phases of Bergen-Belsen’s history. These resources form the basis of the displays, video points and supplementary information in the permanent exhibition. The department also helps prepare and organise temporary exhibitions at the Bergen-Belsen Memorial.
At the same time, the Research and Documentation department is an important interface to other memorials and research institutions and to the general public in Germany and abroad. The team assists and advises guests from around the world, including survivors of Nazi persecution and other witnesses along with their families, the relatives of victims, historians and journalists, students, local history associations and interested individuals as well as other archives, memorials and museums.
The Research and Documentation department supports research into the history and consequences of Nazi persecution, and it contributes to this research through its own publications on the history of Bergen-Belsen.
