Online seminar: Bergen-Belsen – A site and its stories (two 90-minute sessions)
The Bergen-Belsen Memorial offers online seminars for school classes and other interested groups. The participants should be at least 14 years old. The seminars consist of two sessions lasting 90 minutes each which can take place either in a single day or on two different days. Teachers can easily incorporate the seminars into their lesson plan by holding the sessions during double lesson periods over two consecutive weeks, for example.

At the start of the digital seminar, the participants complete a short exercise that introduces them to the topic of Bergen-Belsen. This exercise can also be completed in advance by prior arrangement.
During the two 90-minute sessions, the participants work with various historical sources to explore important aspects of Bergen-Belsen as a POW camp, concentration camp, displaced persons camp and place of remembrance. The seminar leaders talk with the group about the effects of the Nazis’ concept of humanity and of a society organised on racist grounds. The interactive sessions encourage participants to think independently about the past and present significance of the site. Various testimonials provide insights into the prisoner experience and make it possible to talk about the responsibility of the people involved in the crimes. Questions and comments shared by the participants themselves play an important role in shaping the seminar.
The seminar is offered free of charge.
Technical requirements
This seminar requires a reliable internet connection and the ability to hold a video conference with both audio and video. Zoom is our preferred conference software, but if this application is not available at your institution, please let us know so that other arrangements can be made. The participants should ideally have their own individual devices to strengthen the participatory aspects of the seminar.
