Katrin Unger is the point of contact for multi-day events as well as cooperative educational projects and those funded by third parties at the Memorial. The focal points of her work include the continual development of the overall concept for educational work at the Memorial, overseeing the development of materials and event formats, and monitoring quality assurance for the training and further education of the Memorial’s employees. She is responsible at the Memorial for the cooperation of the state of Lower Saxony with the Yad Vashem Memorial and the annual educators’ seminar in Israel in cooperation with the Lower Saxony State Institute for Quality Development in Schools. She is a member of the memorial pedagogy working group and represents the Bergen-Belsen Memorial in the “Vergegenwärtigungen” research training group at the University of Hamburg. Katrin Unger additionally coordinates the project for the expansion of the Bergen-Belsen Memorial in the Bergen-Hohne barracks.

Katrin Unger studied European ethnology, social pedagogy and adult education at Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg, earning a master’s degree. During her studies, she worked as a freelancer at the Max Mannheimer Study Centre in Dachau until 2012. While there, she developed teaching materials and event formats on the topic of National Socialism, particularly relating to the history of the Dachau concentration camp, and she conducted multi-day seminars and projects with various target groups. Furthermore, from 2001 to 2008 she worked for a developmental policy association in Bayreuth in the field of education and public relations. From 2008 to 2012, Katrin Unger worked as a research assistant and provisional manager on the project entitled “Disenfranchisement as a life experience” organised by the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation, which developed innovative educational formats for human-rights-oriented memorial work. Since 2012 she has been a director of the Education and Encounters department together with Marc Ellinghaus. Thanks to numerous training and further education courses, she has a diverse didactic and methodological portfolio in the fields of memorial work, historical-political education, global learning, and teaching that is conscious and critical of preconceptions.
